Asphalt in the Pipette Video

In this video, the shape of the asphalt packed into the pipette can be seen. The pipette itself was filtered out by using Xradia’s proprietary 3D viewer which allows the user to filter out objects of certain density. In this case, the user filtered out objects having the density of plastic and highlighted objects having the density of the mineral filler.

This cross sectional movie shows the distribution of the mineral particles in the asphalt. The pipette containing the asphalt can be seen clearly.

Summary

This asphalt sample was scanned to assess the grain size of interior particles and the distribution of air voids. This knowledge will aid in the creation of better asphalt mixtures.

Subject

This sample is a combination of tar with a mineral mixture that has passed through a #200 sieve.

About the Scan

During initial scans, it was noticed that the asphalt (shown below) deformed during the scan. This was verified by the source drift file which showed mineral particles sinking in the tar as the scan was performed. The particles’ motion invalidated reconstruction. To remedy this, the asphalt was packed into a pipette which gave it little room to move. This procedure stopped movement of the particles and gave better results in the reconstruction.
